History

Gulf Stream got its start in the 1920s when the family of Henry Phipps, Jr. began buying parcels of land along the area’s Intercoastal Waterway for future development. Phipps, Jr. was co-founder of Carnegie Steel Company, along with Andrew Carnegie, that later became U.S. Steel. The balmy coastal area was earmarked as a wonderful place to construct a golf course and polo field, and so they did. Established in 1924, Gulf Stream Golf Club now operates as a private, invitation-only club whose course was designed by Donald Ross.
